The book shows the peruser taking care of individuals, to making them like you, and to influencing individuals to your thinking.Handed to me a few years back by a good natured grown-up, I looked over the book rather disastrously, in any case anxious to get from it what I can. Dale Carnegieââ¬â¢s self improvement guide completely changed me, in that it understood more than its guarantee of making me companions and impacting individuals â⬠the book permitted me to see, plainly, that individuals these days are not all that ope n to your grins and your and your relational moving, regardless of how genuine and benevolent you may be.Subliminal messages of benevolence and kinship donââ¬â¢t go excessively well with individuals nowadays, contrasted with the in-text tributes of individuals from fifty years prior. To summarize a well known saying, the way to honest goals is cleared with rehearsed grins and the inescapable anger youââ¬â¢ll raise with each one of those grins. Try not to affront, says the book, be earnest about this. For instance, the book urges the peruser to, well, grin, and do it with your heart and the most flawless of your expectations sparkling through.Take that saleslady for instance: toward the finish of both your days, you give her a grin, and she overlooks herself and frowns at you, maybe believing that you are another requesting client, before she sets up the prepared exterior of phony merriment and asks you, ââ¬Å"What would i be able to accomplish for you, maââ¬â¢am? â⬠Y ou endeavor to finagle the collaboration of a partner by underscoring his accomplishments, and afterward overlooking your own. Most aspiring people think about your recognition as their right, and gesture their affirmation, and proceed onward, uninfluenced. It appears that any thoughtful gesture will be confused as one with questionable intentions. It turns out to be more clear than any other time in recent memory how skeptical, fatigued and world-exhausted individuals have become, until you grin at their heading for no obvious explanation, in light of no plan. You are quickly rewarded with theory and uncertainty, that with one grin, individuals see an abundance of pernicious arranging and not exactly better than average aims behind it. Furthermore, you canââ¬â¢t accuse your distrustful crowd. Practice the principles of the book all you need, yet at that point, you despite everything wind up following directs in regards to how to treat individuals better, generally on the grounds that you need something from them â⬠be it kinship, understanding, regard or obedience.Ironically, in our longing to contact individuals with no vindictiveness, we do so inspired by our requirements and requests from them. Essentially, How to Win Friends and Influence People is the generous personââ¬â¢s manual for assuming control over the world, in his own specific manner. What's more, perhaps in that lies the essential defect in my character, and in the various individuals I realize who state that this book has ââ¬Å"failedâ⬠them as well, that maybe I am not benevolent enough for this, not chivalrous, not kind enough. Also, perhaps, I, as well, am dreadfully negative to accept that this book could really work. But then the book can instruct you to rise above this, as it professes to be a manual for making companions, to guaranteeing agreeable connections between outsiders, partners, loved ones. It counts and explains methods and gadgets, from that true grin, to thankfu lness and recognition, to making light of your own benefits so as to energize the profitability of others â⬠it is a self improvement guide about legitimate collaboration with your individual man. What's more, maybe that is the bookââ¬â¢s extreme disappointment, permitting us to perceive how critical and bored this world has become: that we really need a self improvement guide to show us how to be tolerable people. colnesibi1971http://www.blogger.com/profile/13858655186467674171noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-957297034961533716.post-48282981750241459562020-08-22T23:05:00.001-07:002020-08-22T23:05:31.236-07:00Report on Apples Market Capitalization Value free essay sampleThis report gives a concise review of Appleââ¬â¢s advertise capitalization esteem improvement in contrast with its present opponent Samsung in the course of recent years. Francisco de Zurbaran approaches the artwork with a naturalistic style. The artistic creation includes a room wherein a lady ? like heavenly attendant is seen at the left stooping on the ground before the Virgin Mary. Coasting over the two principle figures in the upper left half of the artwork are seraphs laying on a bed of mists. They joyfully look down at Mary with eyes from Heaven. The Annunciation utilizes components of configuration to make an outwardly satisfying picture. The visual components comprise of light, shading, surface, shape, and line. The utilization of light is one of the most clear components in this canvas. Light stresses the light complexion of the Angel and Mary as the two of them look down towards a shadowy floor. Light likewise mirrors the open Bible on the table recommending accentuation on the sacredness of Mary. The remainder of the room remains frightfully dim and dull. Shading is utilized to cause to notice significant characters and articles in the artistic creation. The red of Mary's shirt stresses her place as the fundamental figure. A splendid, yellow cloud skimming over the room represents the delight of the celestial figures. De Zurbaran utilizes warm hues in the closer view. The room, utilized as the foundation for the scene, is painted in dim hues using various tones of dim and earthy colored. A spectator can likewise acquire a feeling of surface in this artistic creation. The Angel seems to have padded wings, smooth skin, and delicate hair. Window hangings that hang above Mary have a full and characterized feel to them. The green decorative liner on the little table before Mary has an inferred plush surface. The cloud by the angels has a delicate, cushion ? like appearance. The commonness of surface backings De Zurbaran' s utilization of authenticity in this work of art. The Angel on the left and Mary on the privilege are comparative in size. The two figures face towards the focal point of the image however are isolated by a raised advance that Mary is stooping on. The rosy ? pink shaded window ornament holding tight the correct side adjusts the cloud on the left side. A green scarf worn by the Angel and the green decorative liner likewise give comparable visual weight. An open entryway out of sight at the focal point of the room appears to make an imperceptible line down the focal point of the work of art. De Zurbaran' s utilization of point of convergence and accentuation is effortlessly recognized in this work of art. The fundamental point of convergence is the two figures, the Virgin Mary and the Angel. This accentuation is made using light. The auxiliary point of convergence is the heavenly figures on the cloud over the Angel and Mary. The brilliance of the shading yellow brings the eyewitness' s consideration regarding them. As social creatures, humans have the need to identify themselves as one of a group, whether that group is a family, a culture, or a religion. The experience of alienation is one of violation of a persons need for acceptance. Both Leo Tolstoy in The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Franz Kafka in Metamorphosis use alienation as a central theme to comment on the human need to experience love and acceptance. Both Ivan Ilyich and Gregor Samsa experience in their respective tragedies a great deal of alienation, which separates them from the groups to which they have been comfortably attached for most of their lives. Both authors trace the theme of alienation by exposing the displacement experienced emotionally, psychologically, and physically by their central characters. The physical changes that plagued both Ivan Ilyich and Gregor Samsa were the forces that perpetuated further alienation. These p hysical changes are important to note because not only did they change the appearances of the characters, but they also affected the way those around them viewed them, and deeply influenced the way both men viewed themselves and others. Though the physical changes may seem to be the least tragic part of both stories, by physically distinguishing the men as different from those around them, the authors are better able to comment on the mental isolation which becomes the worst part of both mens misfortunes. The physical alienation felt by both characters is therefore an impetus for the other forms of alienation that later affect Gregor and Ivan. Both men undergo disturbing physical transformations that change their lives. Gregors physical change is obvious immediately in the first sentence of Kafkas Metamorphosis. As soon as he awakens, Gregor finds himself transformed in his bed into a monstrous insect [. . .] lying on his hard shell-like back and [. . .] he could see his curved brown belly, divided by stiff arching ribs (Kafka 76). This physical transformation begins a series of events in which Gregor is alienated from his family and acquaintances. Gregors transformation is all encompassing; not only does he look completely different, but his voice, his tastes, and his abilities have undergone serious alterations also. This complete physical change is only partially his physical alienation. Gregor is also physically distanced from those around him. He is physically isolated from his family as they lock him in a room and are unable to even look at his monstrous form. Gregors adjustment from being a daily traveler with his job to being a literal prisoner in his home is one way in which the reader can identify with the drastic alienation Gregor experiences as a result of his physical transformation. The door to his bedroom becomes a barrier rather than an opening to the world, and the reader witnesses the great difficulty that Gregor has: he clenched his jaws desp erately on the key (Kafka 86).Ivan physical alienation is less dramatic than Gregors, but also begins a series of alienations. Instead of a dramatic alteration of appearance, Ivan physical transformation is a slow deterioration of the body, which for most of the story is unnoticeable. Though the sickness causes pain for Ivan, the physical changes do not become apparent until almost two-thirds of the way through the story when his brother-in-law visits. Even Ivan is unaware of his physical transformation, as is shown when his brother-in-law opened his mouth to gasp but checked himself, and Ivan asks, What is itÃâ¹have I changed? (Tolstoy 85). Ivan, like Gregor, is also physically isolated from his former life. He, too, was confined to his room after his sickness began to hinder his formerly sociable lifestyle, and is subjected to watching his loved ones go about in a whirl of social activity (Tolstoy 80). Tolstoy exposes the alienation his character feels through the long and solit ary hours in which Ivan constantly questions his misfortunes and rages against death while his family goes about their daily lives. The alienation experienced by both characters is also exposed through psychological methods. Ivan and Gregor both experience changes in how they are able to view themselves and their relationships with others. Though both constantly reach out to lessen the effects of the alienation they are experiencing, neither is able to maintain the psychology they had before misfortune struck. Ivans realization of his mortality is an extreme change in his psychology and allows him to deepen his formerly shallow existence. For example, during a game of cards, which he used to enjoy greatly, Ivan watched and he saw how upset Mikhail Mikhailovich was while he himself did not care. And it was dreadful to think why he did not care (Tolstoy 82). This change in Ivan further alienates him from his acquaintances because they have not reached the same level of enlightenment as Ivan. This psychological alienation is yet another reminder of Ivans separation from others. He has matured through facing his mortality, and his growth has placed a barrier between him and his friends.Gregor is psychologically alienated because although he is an insect, he still has the thought process of a human being. This dichotomy proves a difficult shift in Gregors psychological well-being. He is torn between hopes of returning to his human form, and his comfort as a monstrous insect. One scene that marks his psychological alienation occurs when his sister and mother are attempting to move the furniture out of the room to make Gregors movement easier. Despite the advantages of having less furniture to impede his movement, Gregors desire to keep his room like it was when he was human is overwhelming: no doubt he would be free to crawl about unimpeded in all directions, but only at the price of rapidly and completely forgetting his human past (Kafka 103). Another example of psy chological alienation occurs at Gregors death. At this point in the story, the reader must realize all that has happened to Gregor: not only his physical form has been irrevocably changed, but his place as the caretaker of the household, and his place in society have been altered. Gregors last thoughts before his death point to the psychological alienation he feels. He no longer is concerned with his own well-being, but that of his family and his own opinion that he must disappear was if anything even firmer than his sisters (Kafka122). This psychological alienation forces Gregor to change his ideas of his own importance. Both of the authors reveal their main characters to be emotionally alienated from others also. For example, Ivans emotions are most often kept hidden from those around him. Several times in the text, Tolstoy hints to the reader that Ivan desires an emotional connection to those around him, but he is unable to connect because he wishes to keep a strong appearance in front of his colleagues. Even before Ivan learns of his impending death, he is emotionally isolated from others, as is revealed in his relationship with his wife and family. Ivan is emotionally alienated and has the need to fence off a world for himself outside the family (Tolstoy 57). After his illness begins, Ivan realizes the dangers in this emotional alienation and tries to reach out, but finds himself unable to do so because of social conventions. Ivan longs for human affection:He knew that he was an important functionary with a graying beard, and so this was impossible; yet all the same he longed for it [. . .] Ivan Ilyich wanted to cry, wanted to be caressed and cried over, yet his colleague Shebek, a member of the court, would come and instead of crying and getting affection, Ivan Ilyich would assume a serious, stern, profound expression [. . . ] Nothing did so much poison the last days of Ivan Ilyichs life as this falseness in himself and in those around him. (Tolstoy 105)G regor also suffers from emotional alienation. As the main source of income for the family, he has an emotional attachment to them as dependents. His love for his family, particularly his mother and sister, is shown through Gregors thoughts after his transformation. His desire to remain emotionally connected with his family, particularly his younger sister, is presented during the scene in which Gregor listens to his sister playing the violin: It seemed to him as if the way were opening towards the unknown nourishment he craved (Kafka 117). Kafka uses this scene to show the effects of the emotional alienation that Gregor experiences, and how he, like Ivan yearns for love and acceptance, despite his monstrous form. Both Tolstoy and Kafka use the theme of alienation to show the deepest emotions of those who have suddenly experienced a great change. Because both Gregor and Ivan experience a life-changing event, they are forced, through alienation, to question their own worth. By analyzin g the psychological, emotional and physical aspects of alienation is The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Metamorphosis, the reader sees the similarities in the two characters positions as they are suddenly forced to reflect on their own importance and question their autonomy. colnesibi1971http://www.blogger.com/profile/13858655186467674171noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-957297034961533716.post-86064026260754327532020-06-06T11:45:00.001-07:002020-06-06T11:45:02.844-07:00A Chicago Booth Students Journey from Finance to Sillicon Valley This interview is the latest in an Accepted.com blog series featuringà interviews with current MBA students, offering readers a behind-the-scenes look atà top MBA programs. And now for a chat with Andrew Edelman, a student at Chicago Booth. Accepted: Wed like to get to know you! Where are you from? Where and what did you study as an undergrad? What was your most recent pre-MBA job? Andrew: Thanks for featuring me on Accepted.com! I was born in Paris, France, but grew up here in the U.S. where I spent most of my youth in the Boston area. Needless to say, I really enjoyed the outcome of this yearââ¬â¢s Super Bowl! I attended Davidson College in North Carolina where I received a B.A. in Economics with a Concentration in Applied Mathematics. At Davidson, I was captain of the Mens Division I Swimming team and met my future wife who was captain of the volleyball team. We now have two amazing sons, the second of whom was born during my first week at Chicago Booth. I always say my wife is my secret weapon during this business school journey. Immediately before attending business school, I was a Vice President at Corrum Capital Management, a boutique alternative investment management firmà headquartered in Charlotte, NC. Upon moving to Chicago and before starting classes, I did a two-month internship with a classmateââ¬â¢s startup that was participating in Chicago Boothsà Polsky Center Accelerator Program. My experience was actually featured in a recentà WSJ articleà about pre-MBA internships and was an exciting opportunity to diversify my skill set before starting summer internship recruiting. Accepted: Where are you currently in b-school? What year? Andrew: Im a second year at The University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Its hard to believe Im already entering my final quarter; graduation is less than 100 days away! Accepted: Why did you choose Booth? How would you say youre a good fit for the program? Which other programs had you considered? Andrew: I choose Booth because I wanted to surround myself with extremely intelligent, high quality people. From the incredible faculty to my impressive classmates to the accessible alumni, Iââ¬â¢ve been fortunate to learn from such a diverse and humble group. Iââ¬â¢ve personally benefitted most from Boothââ¬â¢s pay it forward mentality that permeates career preparation and recruiting. Iââ¬â¢ve really enjoyed the opportunity to give back as a member of the Graduate Business Council and co-chair of the Booth Technology Group. My business school decision came down to Booth and UC Berkeley (Haas), both great programs. It was a difficult decision, but after visiting Booth during the admitted students weekend, now called First Day, I knew it was the right fit for me. Accepted: And if you could change one thing about the program, what would it be? Andrew: With evening, weekend, and PhD programs, Booth is unique in the sheer number of working professionals concurrently pursuing their MBAs. Although Iââ¬â¢ve taken a couple evening classes at our downtown Gleacher Center, I feel that most of my academic experience has been centered down at the Harper Center in Hyde Park and kept separate from evening/weekend students. With more work experience on average and equally diverse backgrounds, I wish I had more organized opportunities to interact with these students to expand my network and learn from their experiences. Accepted: Where did you intern last summer? Can you tell us about the role Booth played in helping you secure that position? Andrew: I did my summer internship at Google in Mountain View. I was an MBA intern with the Global SMB Solutions team, which is responsible for increasing product adoption and driving revenue growth with small and medium businesses. It was an amazing experience! As a career switcher, from financial services to tech, the preparation and mentorship offered through Career Services and the members of the Booth Technology Group were invaluable to my success securing a coveted spot at Google. I also benefited from the advantages of Boothââ¬â¢s flexible curriculum that permitted me to take courses early in my first year to prepare for the internship, including the experiential Developing New Products Services course that paired my group with a leading digital media company for a consulting project. Many people assume that because Booth is in the Midwest there are fewer opportunities in the technology industry, but thatââ¬â¢s a common misconception. I had internship interviews with five of the largest technology companies in the world and was one of a dozen Boothies at Google this summer. In fact, Booth placed more students from my class in tech internships than investment banking, second only to consulting. Itââ¬â¢s a trend that is developing at business schools across the country and itââ¬â¢s exciting to see Booth leading the way! Chicago also has a very underrated tech scene that is booming. Booth has been a large contributor with successful startups growing out of our New Venture Challenge like GrubHub, BrainTree, and MuSigma. Accepted: Likewise, if you have a job lined up for next year, can you talk about how Booth was involved in that process? Whats recruiting like on campus? How early does it start? Andrew: Im excited to be returning to Silicon Valley as a Management Associate with Box in their Rotational Leadership Program. I was looking to join a smaller tech firm full-time, so the majority of my recruiting this year was done off-campus. I was able to leverage the Booth network and my experience at Google to gain access to several high-growth tech companies. Although I didnââ¬â¢t participate in on-campus recruiting for my full-time search, I can tell you that it does begin very quickly, pretty much right when we all return from our summer internships in late August. There tends to be a flurry of on-campus activity the first two weeks back, which this year included tech firms like Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, and Samsung. Accepted: Looking back at the MBA application process, what would you say was your biggest challenge? How would you advise others who are facing a similar challenge? Andrew: The biggest challenge for me was managing the surprisingly demanding application process while balancing my career and family responsibilities. Looking back, I wish I had started the process earlier to meet the Round 1 deadlines and not felt obligated to push my applications back to Round 2. In addition, itââ¬â¢s become increasingly difficult to fully showcase your whole self in such a short amount of space and limited word count. Getting to an interview was my biggest objective because I knew I could better convey a sense of self than I could in an essay. Accepted: How are you enjoying your time in Chicago? How does student life differ there than in North Carolina? Andrew: My wife and I always joke that if you could remove the harsh winters from Chicago it would easily be the best city in the U.S., if itââ¬â¢s not already. Weââ¬â¢ve honestly loved our time here in Chicago. We live downtown where we have several world-class museums, an abundance of amazing restaurants, and even the sandy beaches of Lake Michigan right at our doorstep. Having grown up in the Northeast, the winters have not been too bad for me, but I definitely feel for my classmates from South America who are experiencing true winter for the first time. Itââ¬â¢s hard to compare my undergrad experience in Davidson, NC to my graduate student experience here in Chicago. Overall, studying business at Booth in a big city like Chicago has been a great complement to my liberal arts education at a small school in rural North Carolina. Iââ¬â¢ve thoroughly enjoyed both experiences! For one-on-one guidance on your b-school applications, please see our MBA Application Packages.à You can read more about Andrewââ¬â¢s journey by checking out his Twitterà andà LinkedInà pages. It is what keeps the country going and develops hard workers of many. Langston Hughesââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"I, Tooâ⬠and Walt Whitmanââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"I Hear America Singingâ⬠is the epitome of that dream, the poems both demonstrate a certain air of aspiration for the future of America and both of the speakers want change for the better. The poemââ¬â¢s speakers are both men and are of the working class. Even though their jobs may not be desirable and in Hughesââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"I, Tooâ⬠the speaker may be working against his will, he is still working and they are both adhering with them for that feeling of hope. After all, the working class strata are the people with the strongest appetite for that dream because the reasonâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦During that time men were the only ones working strenuous jobs. Women took on roles that are more nurturing and caring. Usually stay-at-home housework and b e a mother to their children. In the text women are not really recognized, in terms of the time when these poems were written it was normal and expected. It makes sense that both of the speakers are men because women were not equal to men yet. In ââ¬Å"I hear America Singingâ⬠Whitman describes the women and their roles, ââ¬Å"The delicious singing of the mother, or of the young wife at work, or of the girl sewing or washing,â⬠(Kennedy 1096). Back then the importance and the main focus towards equality was around men. Women were completely stereotyped in this quote because women do not just take on those roles anymore. There was no hope for them here and just simply doing their work in which they will have to do while they have children and are married. Nevertheless women were still mildly acknowledged. Women are completely left out in Langston Hughesââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"I, Tooâ⬠. Of course there were women who were slaves, but Hughes only refers to the speaker as ââ¬Å"the darker brother.â⬠(Kennedy 976) The femininity acquired in this poem is when Hughes says, ââ¬Å" Besides, Theyââ¬â¢ll see how beautiful I am And be ashamedà ¬Ã ¬Ã¢â¬âââ¬âââ¬Å" (Kennedy 977). It takes much more than I had presumed to make a movie in Hollywood. The number of people that it takes to make a minute of a movie let alone the entire movie was astonishing to me. There are many things that it takes to start making a movie but without an idea of some sort there is no movie to be made. A crew includes a screenwriter, whose job it is to provide the written blueprint version of the entire film. This is basically the starting point for any movie. Next there is the producer. There are many types of producers; executive producers, co-producers, assistant producers and lineâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦After one has proved the ââ¬Å"Chain of Title,â⬠then one can get insurance and distribution, and begin to create the story synopsis. The software Final Draft automatically puts a written screenplay into the correct format. Also, books such as Story by Robert McKee and The Foundations of Screenwriting by Syd Field are wonderful books to read on how to set up the proper screenplay format. Like always, it is a good idea to keep a story file or notebook of all the ideas and stories a person has written. After all that, a person needs to copyright ones work. There are two ways of copyrighting. One way is by using the Common-Law Copyright which means a person mails a copy to ones self via registered or certified mail. The second way is the WGA registration which a free form from WGA. After the copyright, a contract is m ade based on payment, contingent payment, credit, how many rewrites, and set visits. Rape law reform urging courts to treat rape case the same as other crimes, rape law reforms modified traditional rape laws and ratified evidentiary reforms in every state in the United States. The most common and widespread changes occurred in three areas. First, rape was redefined so that there was no longer a single crime of rape. Second, the victim was no longer required to support her testimony. These laws are also intended to encourage victims of sexual assault to alert law enforcement authorities of the attack, as opposed to keeping it secret. For instance, America has been a country where women are being oppressed for decades, and limited opportunities in society make it harder for women to have a voice in the legal systems. However, after many feminist movements, women have an equal rights and equal protection in the society and especially in the court system. Such rights and protection include voting and the statue of rape shield and etc. For example, In the case of Kobe Bryant, if this incident were happened in the 1920s and 1930, when women were considered being as a property of man, this case most likely would not be reported to authorities and even prosecuted. What do Nurse Practitioners do that is different from a Registered Nurse or a doctor? 3.What are the main health issues for adolescents; what barriers exist for them accessing health care and how could we minimise these barriers? 4.Discuss strategies you would use to ensure he has continuity of care between hospital and Community follow-up, and that he is selfmanaging, including an ongoing health promotion program. 5.What is cultural safety and how do you know if you are Culturally Safe? 6.Mixed-method approaches are increasingly important in obtaining the 'whole picture' about Community health. Explain why? Answers: 1.Creating Supportive Environments Our society is interrelated and complex. The inextricable link between the environment and people comprise the foundation for a socioecological advance to health. In this case, it is important for communities, region, nations, and the world alike to take care of the environment in order to ensure our survival. The issue of environmental conservations should be emphasized as a global duty. In this case, health professionals have a significant role to enact this policy. One of the ways healthcare providers can enact this policy is by organizing health promotions to sensitize people on the importance of taking care of the natural environment (Rolls, Hansen, Jackson Elliott, 2016). 2.Nurse practitioners play a significant role in community health. Unlike registered nurses and doctors who work in surgical and hospital settings, nurse practitioners work in community clinics and private settings, which brings a big difference in enhancing community health. Despite the positive impact nurse practitioners have on the health of communities, the number of nurse practitioners is not high as compared to registered nurses, this is because of the level of education required for one to obtain a title to work as a nursing practitioners. RN need a degree in nursing while nursing practitioners need a Masters degree (Schoonhoven, Wijers, Burgt, Wensin Laurant, 2016). 3.Mental health is the main health concern for adolescents. According to Delamater, Guzman, Aparicio Aparicio (2017), depression is the leading cause of disability and illness among adolescents. Some of the risk factors for depression in adolescents include poverty, violence, and the feeling of being devalued. The solution to this health issue is to build life skills to enable them cope with stress. Drugs and alcohol are some of the other health issue affecting adolescents. drugs and alcohol increases risky behaviors and reduces self control, this can lead to health risks like unsafe, which can jeopardize the health of adolescents. The solution for this problem is by implementing policies that limit the age of buying alcohol in order to reduce harmful drinking. 4.In order to ensure the continuity of care, I will assess the level at which the patient is informed on the available resources to meet their health needs (Turner, 2016). In addition, I will evaluate the outcome of care in terms of cost, quality, and accessibility, this is imperative in ensuring optimal care for the patient. Finally, I will elicit satisfactory suggestions and services for the patient and their families in order to improve the nature of care, which can be achieved through an assessment of the progress made by the patient and the patients family then offering them with suggestions to enhance on the patient outcome. 5.Cultural safety refers to the environment that is safe where there is no denial, challenge, or assault of identity for what they need or who they are. Cultural safety is based on shared knowledge, shared meaning, and shared respect (Usher, Mills, West Power, 2017). One of the ways in which I can tell that I am culturally safe is by being provided with a positive environment where I am comfortable being myself. In addition, for me to feel culturally safe, my beliefs and spiritual systems should be provided by the healthcare providers. In this case, the healthcare providers should not discriminate me for who I am. 6.Mixed methods are ideal in obtaining the whole picture of the community health, this is because, mixed methods collect and analyze both qualitative and quantitative data. In addition, mixed methods use rigorous trial in the process of collecting and analyzing data, which is essential in the determination of sample size for both qualitative and quantitative analysis. finally, mixed methods are important as they frame procedures within a theoretical or philosophical model such as community health and steps to ensure the populations receives quality treatment (Hawthorne, 2017). The theatre had no debt, the board and artists were united, the past season successful and fund-raising for the upcoming season secure. The theatre thanked all of its funders prior to the public announcement and served notice it would not be able to accept over $40,000 in funds already awarded for fiscal year 92. The theatres annual budget was a little less than $200,000 at the time of closing. Brass Tacks was widely known and respected for its productions of new works by writers such as Lee Blessing, Sherry Kramer, Darrah Cloud, Kevin Kling, Jon Klein, Steven Dietz, Mac Wellman, Eric Overmyer, Jeff Jones, Len Jenkin and Jim Stowell. So you want to know why. There must be something, some dirty little secret, a buried body or two something. No one just walks away from her baby. In fact there are lots of dirty little secrets and hundreds of buried bodies. Look around, is there one in your office? In the months before we went public with the news of the theatres closing, I kept finding myself in Kafkaesque situations, announcing Brass Tackss impending demise to people who were busy arranging funerals of their own. The first came last spring when the associate artistic director of a prominent theatre came to Minneapolis to see me. She and her theatre had promised to do a production of my play, Dr. M. Kurtzs Christian Radio Hour, in the summer. We went to lunch, and she kept asking me questions about Brass Tacks, which I kept shrugging off. Finally, I asked about production plans for my play. I learned she had been let go in a round of budget cuts and the second stage was backing off from new work. She wanted me to hire her, thats why she was in town. I told her I didnt think there would be anything for her at Brass Tacks. What I didnt tell her is that there wouldnt be a Brass Tacks. The same spring, I got a call from Keryl McCord, the executive director for the League of Chicago Theatres. She wanted to fly me down to give a talk to arts groups in trouble, as I had in San Francisco in 1989, after Brass Tacks had been successfully streamlined. Thinking she would not want an ex-artistic director, I came clean about my decision to resign. She said she wanted me at the conference more than ever. A few weeks later an assistant phoned: the conference had been indefinitely postponed lack of funds. In late July, I called Nello McDaniel, executive director of FEDAPT, the arts management service organization, and told him the news. He seemed distracted. He was packing boxes. FEDAPT was closing. Nello and George Thom have moved on to a new approach and new organization, Arts Action Research, because they,re so convinced that old methods are not going to bring relief and change to the arts. I wrote Ben Cameron, director of the Theater Program at the National Endowment of the Arts, so we could stop the grant wheel from churning there. Ive known and admired Ben for years and felt especially close to him because he led me to re-organize Brass Tacks during a fiscal crisis the theatre experienced in 1988. I wrote: We are not in crisis or debt, the board and I are closer than ever, our new structure perfectly fine. I want to pursue my writing. After much thought I have concluded that being an artist while running a small not-for-profit in this currently hostile climate is a flawed strategy. The theatres survival seems to hinge on factors frequently beyond our control. The Twin Cities largest newspaper is giving the arts significantly less coverage. Theatre rental is rising and suitable space options narrowing. Spiraling production costs have rapidly outpaced the theatres ability to generate revenue, earned or contributed. In one year our health benefits costs alone nearly doubled. Because of the nature of our mission we have been unable to attract a sizable core audience, yet we are increasingly dependent on ticket sales. The arts industry is over-regulated and plagued by changing demographics. I am discouraged by the relentless attack of the arts from the left and the right. I am sick to death of Donald Wildmon and political correctness. One of my childhood memories is of visiting some elderly relatives in Gerardville, Penn. after all the coal had been mined out. With Irish stubborness, they had stayed on while the town dried up. It was a learning experience. .uad85e8cdf7d5b3e425d7903887ee26f0 , .uad85e8cdf7d5b3e425d7903887ee26f0 .postImageUrl , .uad85e8cdf7d5b3e425d7903887ee26f0 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uad85e8cdf7d5b3e425d7903887ee26f0 , .uad85e8cdf7d5b3e425d7903887ee26f0:hover , .uad85e8cdf7d5b3e425d7903887ee26f0:visited , .uad85e8cdf7d5b3e425d7903887ee26f0:active { border:0!important; } .uad85e8cdf7d5b3e425d7903887ee26f0 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uad85e8cdf7d5b3e425d7903887ee26f0 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uad85e8cdf7d5b3e425d7903887ee26f0:active , .uad85e8cdf7d5b3e425d7903887ee26f0:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uad85e8cdf7d5b3e425d7903887ee26f0 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uad85e8cdf7d5b3e425d7903887ee26f0 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uad85e8cdf7d5b3e425d7903887ee26f0 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uad85e8cdf7d5b3e425d7903887ee26f0 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uad85e8cdf7d5b3e425d7903887ee26f0:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uad85e8cdf7d5b3e425d7903887ee26f0 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uad85e8cdf7d5b3e425d7903887ee26f0 .uad85e8cdf7d5b3e425d7903887ee26f0-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uad85e8cdf7d5b3e425d7903887ee26f0:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Eva Smith Original Writing Piece EssayI believe that whats happening in this country is reflected in our arts: diminishing, divided, dishonest and in debt. I suspect that our best tools are realized rather automatically, but if there is to be outside influence, then, best it is done early, as the human mind matures all too rapidly. Children are not consumed with anxiety to learn anything; least of all has it ever crossed their minds that they must learn English. How shall we teach it to them, when the few of us who have begun to know what it is know it to be a issue of accommodations, a thing with which order, method, and all that the developing mind first apprehends and rests upon have nothing to do with a single word. A kind of miraculous flowering of man's still unconscious wisdom, preserved to us as a compensation for our many blunderings, as a reward for our patience in confusion and our fundamental faith in life. Education might be defined as a social process by which, skills and beliefs, attitudes and ideas of the previous generations are passed to the new generation; it is a process, which is necessary for the maintenance, achievement and development of man in society. Gerstner States, "in the public schools we have clung tenaciously to the ideas and techniques of earlier decades and even previous centuries," proving that each generation depends on the preceding generation. This definition assumes a biological view of society, one that grows and evolves with each new generation depending on the growth of previous generations. We all come into this world uniform, and, from the start, we are obliged to turn to others; and while we need a lot of help when we are young, nature has compensated by building into the young a susceptibility to learning. So, no matter what one's view is of what an educational system should be, most will agree, best to start in while young. What is the first lesson to be? What each individual needs to know is the difference between what is naturally right and what is naturally wrong. The second lesson to be learned, is, that the individual is better off doing what is naturally right. How does one teach morals? This is an old dilemma, the teaching of virtue. It is a dilemma largely because virtue is immeasurable. Virtue is instilled likely by repeated actions, a process of trial and error, beginning at the mother's knee and to be continued by all those with whom the child has close connections, and this would certainly include the child's teachers. It takes a "good" teacher, one full of great skills and a glow for presentation of the subject; it is particularly difficult when the subject is morals or virtue. We, adult and child alike, find ourselves in a vast market where the "Culture Standardizers" provide an immediate and sensual gratification to all comers. The question before us is, what is the importance of education? One goal, as Spring states in his book American Education, is to produce reasonable citizens, ones that "commonly hold a political creed or else society is doomed to political strife or chaos" Education should be the essential method of building humane, free, and democratic societies. The aims of education are many: the transmission of knowledge; training for occupations, careers, and democratic citizenship; and the encouragement of moral growth. Dewey states, "the subject matter of education consists of bodies of information and of skills that have been worked out in the past; therefore, the chief business of the school is to transmit them to the next generation." Among its vital purposes should also be an attempt to develop the capacity for critical intelligence in both the individual and the community. Unfortunately, the schools today are being increasingly replaced by the mass media as the primary institutions of public information and education. Although the electronic media provide unparalleled opportunities for extending cultural enrichment and enjoyment, there has been a serious misdirection of their purposes. In some societies, the media serve as the vehicle of propaganda and indoctrination. In democratic society television, radio, films, and mass publishing too often cater to the lowest common denominator and have become dull wastelands. We need to believe that television directors and producers have an obligation to remedy the balance and revise their programming. The essential answer to any question usually comes out of its definition. Considering the definition set out at the first of this section, then, we might say that essentially that education is a socialization process. If an essay is not designed for such a purpose, then the student will find it difficult to understand and absorb the information, and the results of the analysis will most likely be far less valuable than when it is actually designed. To ensure that your essay is designed for the right purpose, you need to take some time to consider what your essay needs to do.The first thing you need to do is think about what the essay is trying to accomplish. For example, if you are using your essay to discuss a specific subject or topic, then you need to consider how the information is presented. To best use your essay for this purpose, make sure that you include content that makes your argument very clear. There are many different ways that you can present your information, but the key to writing a good argument is to clearly demonstrate what you are saying.Secondly, a rhetorical and visual analysis essay sample should include key points in a short form of two or three sentences, which will make it easy for the reader to quickly grasp the information that you have included. There are many different ways to convey this information, but the most effective is to combine visuals with audio clips. By including visual and audio elements together, it will help the reader to quickly and easily understand the information that you have provided. It is also important to consider the way in which you are going to utilize your essay sample. For example, if you are using a text that is written out, then you may want to consider breaking your essay down into paragraphs. Use a block quote for your paragraph breaks, and make sure that your paragraphs are easy to read and comprehend.A rhetorical and visual analysis essay sample will help the reader to quickly read the material a nd process the information that you are presenting. When you first write an essay, it can be easy to become overwhelmed with all of the different ideas that you have. This can result in an essay that takes too long to write and even harder to read. However, using an essay sample will help you break your thoughts down into easily digestible chunks. In addition to the length of the essay, the quality of the essay sample is also very important. If the essay is poorly written, then it can be difficult to use. You should consider carefully what the essay needs to say and try to include the best information possible. This is something that you will want to start working on at the basic level, so that you can start writing an essay from the ground up. For example, if you need to add or subtract a word from your vocabulary, then you will want to start with a few introductory sentences, and then work your way through the material in a logical order. Do not jump around too much in the essay. An objective question usually has only one potential correct answer (although there may be some room for answers that are close), and they leave no room forà opinion. Objective test questions differ from subjective test questions, which have more than one potential correct answer and sometimes have room for a justified opinion. Objective test questions may be constructed as a list of possible answers, requiring the students to recognize the correct one from the list. These questions include matching, true/false, and multiple choice. Otherà objective test questions, like fill-in-the-blank questions, require that the student recall the correct answer from memory. How to Study for Objective Questions Objective questions with short, specific answers require memorization. Flashcards are a helpful tool for this process. However, students should not stop with memorizing terms and definitions, as memorization is only the first step. As a student, you must gain a deeper understanding of each term or concept in order to understand why some potential multiple choice answers areà incorrect. Imagine that you need to know the effects of the Emancipation Proclamation for your history test. To succeed on the test, It is not enough to remember what the proclamationà didà accomplish. You must also consider what this executive orderà did notà do. For example, you should know that the proclamation wasà notà a law and that its impact was limited. This knowledge will help you predict whichà wrongà answers might be presented on the test and will enable you to outsmart any trick questions. Because you should go beyond memorizing answers for your test terms, you should team upà with a study partnerà andà create your ownà multiple choice practice test. Each of you should write out one right and several wrong answers. Then, you should discuss why each potential answer is correct or incorrect. Tackling Objective Test Questions Ideally, you have studied hard and you know all the answers. Realistically, however, there will be some questions that you find a little tricky. Sometimes, a multiple choice question will have two answers that you canââ¬â¢t quite decide between. Donââ¬â¢t be afraid to skip these questions and answer the ones you feel most confident about first. That way, you know what questions you need to spend a little more time on. The same goes for matching style tests. Eliminate all the options you know are wrong and mark out the answers youve already used. This process will make the remaining answers a little easier to identify. colnesibi1971http://www.blogger.com/profile/13858655186467674171noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-957297034961533716.post-30993867626859677662020-02-27T23:44:00.001-08:002020-02-27T23:44:02.348-08:00Individual operations management report Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 wordsIndividual operations management report - Essay Example Lately, the company has been facing tough competition from Chinese manufacturers impacting both its top line and bottom line. In order to improve the situation, the company has initiated a quality improvement plan. Statistical Process Control is being used at one of its toy plants as one of the tools for enabling Total Quality Management. Under this initiative the company plans to analyze the quality of a doll manufacturing unit due to growing concerns over increasing customer returns. The company has decided to evaluate two important parameters of quality ââ¬â colouring and height of the dolls. The data has been collected over a 30 day period. Statistical Control charts are of various types and are used depending upon the situation and the nature of data recorded. For the first set of data, that is, the data for colour defects, c-chart would be the most appropriate control chart since c-chart is used for the number of defects. Since, the number of units tested is constant (=200) in each sample, c-chart is perfect for the situation. Else, a p-chart could have been used. The values of constants A2, D3 and D4 are taken from standard tables for control chart constants (Here values for n=25 have been assumed for the sample size of 30 as the tables contain values till n=25 and calculating annually for higher values is very cumbersome) (Table for Control Chart Constants). For the colour defects, only 1 value (14) is found to lie outside the two control limits. Hence, from the colour defects point of view, the process is only marginally out of control. The control chart for the same is shown in Figure 1. For the heights, a large number of values in both R chart and x bar chart are found lie outside the control limits. Thus, this is a major concern area for the company. The two control charts for the same are shown in the Figures 2 and 3. Advantages of wrapped wire are as follows, it is reliable method, it is relatively cheap, can be used to make a permanent circuit, the last but not the least it is fast and easily to change the system for better operation. Although, this method is highly preferred in most of machines which consume relatively high voltage, they are associated with demerits such that connection to the lead square must be made with solder to the head of the IC socket where the pin wire is heading to. Therefore, capacitors, resistors and transistors soldered to the IC to complete the circuit (Kraslawski & Turunen, 2013). Another disadvantage is that, low current is associated with few number of mA, thus reducing working capacity of the machine. Prototyping environments and processes regarding to a computer system Environment is a key factor that should be considered before buying and setting a prototype system. For instance, a computer is one of the electronic gadgets that require sensitive attention to be considered. Therefore, wrap wire method and printed circuit board are used because they are safe, highly reliable and so on. Computers requires a steady flow of current such that, connection of wires from a power supply to the entire system should be very competed to avoid failure of current from reaching the destination. Additionally, printed circuit board helps machines to keep steadiness flow of current to the junior elements such as transistors and capacitors which maintains functioning of a computer. In a computer system there two types of prototypes namely, hardware prototype and software prototype (National Research Council, 2008). Hardware prototypes are mostly concerned with fixing all the physical functional parts of a computer. These parts include motherboard elements, monitor, a nd switches among other physical part of a computer. On the other hand, software prototypes are concerned with installation of programs, such as micro soft office, VLC, internet among many programs, as one can prefer (Russell, M. T. (2008). The study was built upon six key attributes (telephone features, connection fee, access cost, mobile-to-mobile phone rates, call rates and free calls) related to mobile phone purchasing respondents had to importance rate. The research showed that consumers with prior experience about a product can predict their choices relatively well, although respondents tended to overestimate the importance of features, call rates and free calls and underestimate the importance of a monthly access fee, mobile-to-mobile phones rates and the connection fee. 1.Demographic factors have an influence on the evaluations of different attributes related to mobile phone choice. Specifically, gender and social class will impact on the evaluations of the attributes as men belonging to higher social class seem to be more technology savvy. 2.Consumers value personal time planning properties in the choice of new mobile phones. Consumers value in smart phones features that enhance their personal time planning (e.g., Jones, 2002). These high-rated features include calendar and e-mail services .However, while synchronization of calendar and e-mail services to PCs has become easy and fast, the importance of time planning in mobile phones becomes more and more important. 3.New technical properties increase consumer willingness to acquire new phone models. Another important aspect that has risen from different studies is that consumers purchase new phones due to the fact that their existing oneââ¬â¢s capacity is not appropriate referring to the idea that new technology features such as built-in cameras, better memory, radio, more developed messaging services, and color displays are influencing consumer decisions to acquire new models. Thus it can be expected that new features will influence the intention to acquire new mobile phones. 4.When choosing between different mobile phone models, consumers value larger screen size but the whole phone should be small enough and light to carry in pocket. 5.When choosing between different mobile phone models, consumers value familiar brands. Price of the phone has been identified as a critical factor in the choice of the mobile phone model, especially among younger people. besides new technological advances price is the most influential factor affecting the choice of a new mobile phone model. In addition, it seems that size and brand play to some extent an important role in decision making. Liu (2002) for instance surveyed Asian mobile phone users and found that size of the phone had no impact on mobile phone choice, but this finding might be due to the fact that all competing brands have quite similar sized phones that are small enough. Liu continues that the trend will actually be not towards smaller phones but towards phones with better capability and larger screens. While companies are advertising new models and services that do not yet exist, it according to the paper signals to the market that the company is at the cutting edge of technology and shows what will be available in the very near future. The sales of new phones will then be driven by replacement rather than adoption. colnesibi1971http://www.blogger.com/profile/13858655186467674171noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-957297034961533716.post-65048869577435862802020-01-23T06:57:00.001-08:002020-01-23T06:57:02.633-08:00Great Religions And Philosophies. : Greek Philosophy. Essays -- essays Great Religions and Philosophies. : Greek Philosophy. à à à à à In the 6th century B.C, there began a dualism in Greek Philosophy. The development of Greek Philosophy became a compromise between Greek monistic and oriental influences, in other words, a combination of intellectualism and mysticism. Thus began the pre-Socratic philosophy. The interests of pre- Socratic philosophers were centered on the world that surrounds man, the Cosmos. This was during the time of great internal and external disturbances in the Greek society, as it was right after the Peloponnesian war. The pre-Socratic era of Greek Philosophy came to an end when the Sophists turned their attention to man himself, delving into the moral and mental nature of man and dealing with the practical problems of life. à à à à à The ancient Greeks mirrored their nature, beliefs, morals and customs in Greek Philosophy. Through understanding Greek Philosophy, we can see how the ancient Greeks regard the world around them. Greek Philosophy filled the void in the spiritual and moral life of the ancient Greeks, where in the same place other cultures had their belief in a religion. Wisdom, in the Greek sense, included not only a theoretical explanation of the world around them, but also provided a practical guide to life. à à à à à From Homer to Hesiod, we see the reflections of the ancient Greeks and their use of Gods to fulfill their spiritual, social and psyc... colnesibi1971http://www.blogger.com/profile/13858655186467674171noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-957297034961533716.post-26301093540218912972020-01-15T03:20:00.001-08:002020-01-15T03:20:02.987-08:00The Indigo Spell Chapter OneTHIS WASN'T THE FIRST TIME I'd been pulled out of bed for a crucial mission. It was, however, the first time I'd been subjected to such a personal line of questioning. ââ¬Å"Are you a virgin?â⬠ââ¬Å"Huh?â⬠I rubbed my sleepy eyes, just in case this was all some sort of bizarre dream that would disappear. An urgent phone call had dragged me out of bed five minutes ago, and I was having a little trouble adjusting. My history teacher, Ms. Terwilliger, leaned closer and repeated the question in a stage whisper: ââ¬Å"I said, are you a virgin?â⬠ââ¬Å"Um, yes. . .â⬠I was fully awake now and glanced uneasily around my dorm's lobby, making sure no one was around to witness this crazy exchange. I didn't have to worry. Aside from a bored-looking desk attendant on the far side of the room, the lobby was empty, probably because no sane person would be up at this time of night. When Ms. Terwilliger's call had woken me, she'd demanded I meet her here for a ââ¬Å"life-or-deathâ⬠matter. Getting interrogated about my personal life wasn't quite what I'd expected. She stepped back and sighed in relief. ââ¬Å"Yes, of course. Of course you're a virgin.â⬠I narrowed my eyes, unsure if I should be offended or not. ââ¬Å"Of course? What's that supposed to mean? What's going on?â⬠She immediately snapped back to attention and pushed her wire-rimmed glasses up the bridge of her nose. They were always slipping down. ââ¬Å"No time to explain. We have to go.â⬠She grabbed hold of my arm, but I resisted and stayed where I was. ââ¬Å"Ma'am, it's three in the morning!â⬠And then, just so she'd understand the severity of the situation: ââ¬Å"On a school night.â⬠ââ¬Å"Never mind that.â⬠She turned in the direction of the desk attendant and called across the room, ââ¬Å"I'm taking Sydney Melrose with me. Mrs. Weathers can argue with me about the curfew tomorrow.â⬠The attendant looked startled, but she was just some college student who'd been hired to sit there overnight. She was no match for the formidable Ms. Terwilliger, with her tall, gangly stature and birdlike face. The real authority keeping girls in my dorm was the security guard outside, but he simply nodded in a friendly way when Ms. Terwilliger dragged me past. It made me wonder just how many girls she'd abducted in the middle of the night. ââ¬Å"I'm in my pajamas,â⬠I told her. It was the last protest I could offer as we reached her car, which was parked in a fire lane. She drove a red Volkswagen Beetle with flowers painted on the sides. Somehow, this didn't surprise me in the least. ââ¬Å"You'll be fine,â⬠she said, fishing car keys out of her massive velvet purse. Around us, the desert night was cool and silent. Tall palm trees created dark, spiderlike shapes against the sky. Beyond them, a full moon and smattering of stars glittered. I wrapped my arms around myself, touching the soft fabric of my microfleece robe. Underneath it, I had on full-length striped pajamas paired with fluffy beige slippers. The ensemble worked well in my cozy dorm room but wasn't exactly practical for a Palm Springs night. But then, going out in pajamas wasn't really practical in any place. She unlocked the car, and I stepped gingerly inside, having to dodge empty paper coffee cups and old issues of Utne Reader. My neat sensibilities cringed at that kind of mess, but it was the least of my worries right now. ââ¬Å"Ms. Terwilliger,â⬠I said, once we were driving through the suburban streets. ââ¬Å"What's going on?â⬠Now that we were out of the dorm, I hoped she'd start talking sense. I hadn't forgotten her ââ¬Å"life-or-deathâ⬠comment and was beginning to grow nervous. Her eyes were on the road ahead of us, and lines of worry marked her angular face. ââ¬Å"I need you to cast a spell.â⬠I froze as I tried to process her words. Not long ago, this proclamation would've sent me into protests and fits of revulsion. Not that I was comfortable with it now. Magic still freaked me out. Ms. Terwilliger taught at my private high school, Amberwood Prep, by day and was a witch at night. She said I, too, possessed a natural affinity for magic and had managed to teach me some spells, despite my best efforts to resist. I actually had a few good reasons for wanting to avoid anything arcane. Aside from inborn beliefs about magic being wrong, I simply didn't want to get caught up in any more supernatural affairs than I had to. I already spent my days as part of a secret society that kept vampires secret from the human world. That and my schoolwork were enough to keep anyone busy. Nonetheless, her magical training had gotten me out of some dangerous situations recently, and I was no longer so quick to dismiss it. So, her suggesting I perform magic wasn't the weirdest thing going on here. ââ¬Å"Why would you need me for that?â⬠I asked. There were few cars out, but occasionally, passing headlights would cast a ghostly light over us. ââ¬Å"You're a million times more powerful. I can't cast a fraction of the things you can.â⬠ââ¬Å"Power is one thing,â⬠she admitted. ââ¬Å"But there are other limitations and factors at work here. I can't cast this particular spell.â⬠I crossed my arms and slouched back in the seat. If I kept focusing on the practical aspects, I could ignore how worried I was growing. ââ¬Å"And it couldn't have waited until morning?â⬠ââ¬Å"No,â⬠she said gravely. ââ¬Å"It could not.â⬠Something about the tone of her voice sent chills down my spine, and I fell silent as we continued our drive. We were headed outside of the city and suburbs, into the wilds of the true desert. The farther we drove from civilization, the darker it became. Once we were off the freeway, there were no streetlights or houses in sight. Spiky desert shrubs created dark shapes along the side of the road that put me in mind of crouching animals, ready to pounce. There's no one out here, I thought. And no one back at Amberwood knows you're here either. I shifted uneasily as I recalled her virgin question. Was I going to be a sacrifice in some unholy ritual? I wished that I'd thought to bring my cell phone ââ¬â not that I could have told my organization, the Alchemists, that I was spending so much time with a magic user. And not just any magic user ââ¬â one who was teaching me to become one too. Better to risk being sacrificed than face the Alchemists' wrath. Twenty minutes later, Ms. Terwilliger finally pulled to a stop along the side of a dusty one-lane road that seemed to be a direct route to nowhere. She got out of the car and motioned for me to do the same. It was colder here than it had been back at Amberwood. Looking up into the night sky, I caught my breath. Free of the city lights, the stars were now out in full force. I could see the Milky Way and a dozen constellations usually hidden to the naked eye. ââ¬Å"Stargaze later,â⬠she said curtly. ââ¬Å"We need to hurry, before the moon progresses much further.â⬠A moonlight ritual, a barren desert, virgin sacrifice . . . what had I just foolishly walked into? The way Ms. Terwilliger pushed me into magic always annoyed me, but I never thought she posed a threat. Now I berated myself for being so naive. She tossed a duffel bag over one shoulder and headed off into a desolate stretch of land, dotted with rocks and scraggly vegetation. Even with the brilliant celestial display there wasn't much light out here, yet she walked purposefully, as though she knew exactly where she was going. I dutifully followed, wincing as I crossed the rocky ground. My fuzzy slippers had never been intended for this sort of terrain. ââ¬Å"Here,â⬠she said when we reached a small clearing. She carefully set down the duffel bag and knelt to rifle through it. ââ¬Å"This'll do.â⬠The desert that was so mercilessly hot in the day became cold at night, but I was still sweating. Probably my own anxiety had more to do with that than the temperature or heavy pajamas. I retied my robe more tightly making a perfect knot. I found that kind of detail and routine soothing. Ms. Terwilliger produced a large oval mirror with a scalloped silver frame. She set it down in the middle of the clearing, glanced up at the sky, and then shifted the mirror over a little. ââ¬Å"Come here, Miss Melbourne.â⬠She pointed to a spot opposite her, on the other side of the mirror. ââ¬Å"Sit there and make yourself comfortable.â⬠At Amberwood, I went by the name of Sydney Melrose, rather than my true one, Sydney Sage. Ms. Terwilliger had gotten my made-up name wrong on the first day of class, and it, unfortunately, stuck. I followed her directions, not that I could really get all that comfortable out here. I was pretty sure I could hear some large animal scuffling out in the brush and added ââ¬Å"coyotesâ⬠to my mental list of dangers I faced out here, right below ââ¬Å"magic useâ⬠and ââ¬Å"lack of coffee.â⬠ââ¬Å"Now then. Let's get started.â⬠Ms. Terwilliger peered at me with eyes that were dark and frightening in the desert night. ââ¬Å"Are you wearing anything metal? You need to take it off.â⬠ââ¬Å"No, I ââ¬â oh. Wait.â⬠I reached around my neck and unfastened a delicate gold chain that held a small cross. I'd had the necklace for years but had recently given it to someone else, for comfort. He'd given it back to me recently, by way of our mutual friend Jill Mastrano Dragomir. Even now, I could picture the angry look on her face as she'd stormed up to me at school and thrust the cross into my hand without a word. I stared at the cross now as it gleamed in the moonlight. A queasy feeling welled up in the pit of my stomach as I thought about Adrian, the guy I'd given it to. I'd done so before he professed his love for me, something that had caught me totally off guard a few weeks ago. But maybe I shouldn't have been so surprised. The more I looked back ââ¬â and I did so all the time ââ¬â the more I began to recall telltale signs that should have tipped me off to his feelings. I'd just been too blind to notice at the time. Of course, it wouldn't have mattered if I'd seen it coming or not. Adrian was totally unsuitable for me, and it had nothing to do with his many vices or potential descent into insanity. Adrian was a vampire. True, he was a Moroi ââ¬â one of the good, living vampires ââ¬â but it made no difference. Humans and vampires couldn't be together. This was one point the Moroi and Alchemists stood firmly together on. It was still amazing to me that Adrian had voiced those feelings to me. It was amazing that he could even have them or that he'd had the nerve to kiss me, even if it was a kiss that had left me dizzy and breathless. I'd had to reject him, of course. My training would allow nothing less. Our situation here in Palm Springs forced the two of us to constantly be together in social situations, and it had been rough since his declaration. For me, it wasn't just the awkwardness of our new relationship. I . . . well, I missed him. Before this debacle, he and I had been friends and spent a lot of time together. I'd gotten used to his smirky smile and the quick banter that always flowed between us. Until those things were gone, I hadn't realized how much I relied on them. How much I needed them. I felt empty inside . . . which was ridiculous, of course. Why should I care so much about one vampire? Sometimes it made me angry. Why had he ruined such a good thing between us? Why had he made me miss him so much? And what had he expected me to do? He had to have known it was impossible for us to be together. I couldn't have feelings for him. I couldn't. If we'd lived among the Keepers ââ¬â a group of uncivilized vampires, humans, and dhampirs ââ¬â maybe he and I could have . . . no. Even if I had feelings for him ââ¬â and I firmly told myself I didn't ââ¬â it was wrong for us to even consider such a relationship. Now Adrian spoke to me as little as possible. And always, always, he watched me with a haunted look in his green eyes, one that made my heart ache and ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Ah! What is that?â⬠I squirmed as Ms. Terwilliger dumped a bowl full of dried leaves and flowers over my head. I'd been so fixated on the cross and my memories that I hadn't seen her coming. ââ¬Å"Rosemary,â⬠she said matter-of-factly ââ¬Å"Hyssop. Anise. Don't do that.â⬠I'd reached up to pull some of the leaves out of my hair. ââ¬Å"You need that for the spell.â⬠ââ¬Å"Right,â⬠I said, getting back to business. I set the cross carefully on the ground, trying to clear my mind of green, green eyes. ââ¬Å"The spell that only I can do. Why is that again?â⬠ââ¬Å"Because it has to be done by a virgin,â⬠she explained. I tried not to grimace. Her words implied that she was not a virgin, and even if that made sense for a forty-year-old woman, it still wasn't a thought I wanted to spend a lot of time on. ââ¬Å"That, and the person we're looking for has shielded herself from me. But you? You she won't expect.â⬠I looked down at the shining mirror and understood. ââ¬Å"This is a scrying spell. Why aren't we doing the one I did before?â⬠Not that I was eager to repeat that spell. I'd used it to find someone, and it had involved me staring into a bowl of water for hours. Still, now that I knew how to do it, I knew I could perform it again. Besides, I didn't like the idea of walking into a spell I knew nothing about. Words and herbs were one thing, but what else might she ask of me? Endanger my soul? Give up my blood? ââ¬Å"That spell only works for someone you know,â⬠she explained. ââ¬Å"This one will help you find someone you've never met before.â⬠I frowned. As much as I didn't like magic, I did like problem solving ââ¬â and the puzzles magic often presented intrigued me. ââ¬Å"How will I know who to look for, then?â⬠Ms. Terwilliger handed me a photograph. My eyes had adjusted to the darkness, and I looked into the face of a pretty young woman. There was a striking resemblance between her and my teacher, though it wasn't initially obvious. Rather than Ms. Terwilliger's dull brown hair, this woman's was dark, nearly black. She was also much more glamorous, dressed in a black satin evening gown that was a far cry from Ms. Terwilliger's usual hippie attire. Despite those ostensible differences, the two women shared the same high cheekbones and aquiline eyes. I glanced back up. ââ¬Å"She's related to you.â⬠ââ¬Å"She's my older sister,â⬠Ms. Terwilliger confirmed, her voice remarkably flat. Older? I would've guessed this woman was at least ten years younger. ââ¬Å"Is she missing?â⬠I asked. When I'd scried before, it had been to find a kidnapped friend. Ms. Terwilliger's lips twitched. ââ¬Å"Not in the way you're thinking.â⬠From the never-ending duffel bag, she produced a small leather book and opened it to a marked page. Squinting at where she indicated, I could make out handwritten Latin words describing the mirror and herbal concoction she'd dumped on me. Following that were directions on how to use the spell. No bloodletting, thankfully. ââ¬Å"It sounds too simple,â⬠I said suspiciously. I'd learned that spells that only had a few steps and components usually required a lot of mental energy. I'd passed out from the other scrying spell. She nodded, guessing my thoughts. ââ¬Å"It takes a lot of focus ââ¬â more than the last one. But, as much as you don't want to hear this, your strength has grown enough that you'll probably have an easier time than before.â⬠I scowled. She was right. I didn't want to hear that. Or did I? Part of me knew I should refuse to go along with this madness. Another part of me worried she'd abandon me in the desert if I didn't help. And still another part was insanely curious to see how this would all work. Taking a deep breath, I recited the book's incantation and then set the picture in the middle of the mirror. I repeated the incantation and removed the picture. Leaning forward, I stared into the shining surface, trying to clear my mind and let myself become one with the darkness and moonlight. A hum of energy coursed through me, much more quickly than I expected. Nothing changed in the mirror right away, though. Only my reflection peered back at me, the poor lighting dulling my blond hair, which looked terrible both from sleeping on it and having a bunch of dried plants hanging in its strands. The energy continued to build in me, growing surprisingly warm and exhilarating. I closed my eyes and sank into it. I felt like I was floating in the moonlight, like I was the moonlight. I could've stayed that way forever. ââ¬Å"Do you see anything?â⬠Ms. Terwilliger's voice was an unwelcome interruption to my blissful state, but I obediently opened my eyes and looked into the mirror. My reflection was gone. A silvery gray mist hung in front of a building, but I knew the mist wasn't physical. It was magically produced, a mental barrier to keep me from seeing the image that lay beyond it. Strengthening my will, I pushed my mind passed that barrier, and after a few moments, the mist shattered. ââ¬Å"I see a building.â⬠My voice echoed oddly in the night. ââ¬Å"An old Victorian house. Dark red, with a traditional covered porch. There are hydrangea bushes in front of it. There's a sign too, but I can't read it.â⬠ââ¬Å"Can you tell where the house is?â⬠My teacher's voice seemed very far away. ââ¬Å"Look around it.â⬠I tried to pull back, to extend my vision beyond the house. It took a few moments, but slowly, the image panned out as though I were watching a movie, revealing a neighborhood of similar houses, all Victorian with wide porches and creeping vines. They were a beautiful, perfect piece of history set in the modern world. ââ¬Å"Nothing exact,â⬠I told her. ââ¬Å"Just some quaint residential street.â⬠ââ¬Å"Go back further. See the larger picture.â⬠I did, and it was like I drifted up into the sky, looking down upon the neighborhood the way some soaring bird would. The houses extended into more neighborhoods, which eventually gave way to industrial and commercial areas. I continued moving back. The businesses became more and more densely packed. More streets crisscrossed between them. The buildings grew taller and taller, eventually materializing into a familiar skyline. ââ¬Å"Los Angeles,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"The house is on the outskirts of Los Angeles.â⬠I heard a sharp intake of breath, followed by: ââ¬Å"Thank you, Miss Melbourne. That will be all.â⬠A hand suddenly waved across my field of vision, shattering the city image. Also shattered was that state of euphoria. I was no longer floating, no longer made of light. I came crashing down to reality, down to the rocky desert landscape and my stuffy pajamas. I felt exhausted and shaky, like I might faint. Ms. Terwilliger handed me a thermos full of orange juice, which I drank greedily. As the nutrients hit my system and strengthened me, I began to feel a little better. Intense magic use depleted blood sugar. ââ¬Å"Does that help?â⬠I asked, once I'd downed the thermos. A nagging voice inside me started to chastise about how many calories were in orange juice, but I ignored it. ââ¬Å"Was that what you wanted to know?â⬠Ms. Terwilliger gave me a smile that didn't extend to her eyes. ââ¬Å"It helps, yes. Was it what I wanted?â⬠She stared off into the distance. ââ¬Å"No, not exactly. I was hoping you'd name some other city. Some city far, far away.â⬠I picked up my cross and refastened it around my neck. The familiar object brought on a sense of normality after what I'd just done. It also made me feel guilty, looking back on the euphoric high the magic had given me. Humans weren't supposed to wield magic ââ¬â and they certainly weren't supposed to enjoy it. Running my fingers over the cross's surface, I found myself thinking of Adrian again. Had he ever worn it? Or had he just kept it around for luck? Had his fingers traced the cross's shape like mine often did? Ms. Terwilliger began gathering her things. When she stood up, I followed suit. ââ¬Å"What does it mean exactly, ma'am?â⬠I asked. ââ¬Å"That I saw Los Angeles?â⬠I followed her back toward the car, and she didn't answer right away. When she did, her voice was uncharacteristically grim. ââ¬Å"It means that she's much closer than I would like. It also means, whether you want to or not, you're going to have to work on improving your magical skills very, very quickly.â⬠I came to a halt. Suddenly, I felt angry. Enough was enough. I was exhausted and ached all over. She'd dragged me out here in the middle of the night and now had the presumption to make a statement like that when she knew how I felt about magic? Worse, her words frightened me. What did I have to do with this? This was her spell, her cause. Yet, she'd given the directive with such force, such certainty, that it almost seemed as though I was the reason we'd come out here to this wasteland. ââ¬Å"Ma'am ââ¬â â⬠I began. Ms. Terwilliger spun around and leaned toward me so that there were only a few inches between us. I gulped, swallowing whatever outraged words I'd been about to utter. I'd never seen her look like this. She wasn't scary, not exactly, but there was an intensity I'd never seen before, far different from the usual scattered teacher I knew. She also looked . . . frightened. Life or death. ââ¬Å"Sydney,â⬠she said, in a rare use of my first name. ââ¬Å"Let me assure you that this is not some trick on my part. You will improve upon your skills, whether you like it or not. And it's not because I'm cruel, not because I'm trying to fulfill some selfish desire. It's not even because I hate seeing you waste your ability.â⬠ââ¬Å"Then why?â⬠I asked in a small voice. ââ¬Å"Why do I need to learn more?â⬠The wind whispered around us, blowing some of the dried leaves and flowers from my hair. The shadows we cast took on an ominous feel, and the moonlight and starlight that had seemed so divine earlier now felt cold and harsh. ââ¬Å"Because,â⬠Ms. Terwilliger said. ââ¬Å"It's for your own protection.â⬠colnesibi1971http://www.blogger.com/profile/13858655186467674171noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-957297034961533716.post-85639546500980633842020-01-06T23:42:00.001-08:002020-01-06T23:42:03.612-08:00Fahrenheit 451 By F. Montag - 1378 Words The expression of ideas is an irrefutable facet of human nature that cannot be stripped away due to the fact that it does not conform to the expectations of society. This idea of censorship impedes the freedom and expression of individuals and dilutes the presence of divergent cultures and beliefs. It is ubiquitous in different forms of media, including books and technology, which leads to the perceived protection from dangerous notions or exposure to outside ideas. As a result of these fears and assumptions, countless books have been wrongfully banned including Fahrenheit 451 which not only conveys concepts such as freedom of religion, but of the dangers of replacing communication with mass media, as well as advocating freedom of expression and ideas. Freedom of religion is shown in numerous forms throughout Fahrenheit 451. Montag, who was characterized as a fireman in this novel, prompts encounters to new religious beliefs within his society, such as Christianity, which was exemplified in this novel. One of the main reasons why Fahrenheit 451 was banned was because of its inclusion of religious content, for example, when Montag saved a bible from a fire while he was on duty. However, one of the set guidelines in his society is that books of any shape, size, or form are prohibited in fear of the Chong 2 ideas that they contain. This incident was notable, because not only did Montag save a book from the fire, it was a book of considerable religious importance. An internalShow MoreRelatedThe Great Gatsby, by F. The Endocrine System consists of many components but is made up of Endocrine glands which have no ducts and usually secrete their hormones directly into the tissue fluid. It also contains many tissues that secrete hormones. The glands of the Endocrine system are located throughout the body but are mostly central to the body. The system has many functions but it has two main functions. The primary function of the Endocrine System is to produce hormones that regulate metabolism, growth and development, sexual function, reproduction, sleep, tissue function, and mood. Its secondary function is to release hormones to aid all the other systems in the body by telling them what to do and when to do it. This system is critical for survival because it regulate s internal function through the production and releasing of hormones. The pituitary gland is a major part of the endocrine system. This gland helps regulate other functions throughout the endocrine system. There are two major parts to the pituitary gland, the posterior and the anterior. The pituitary gland is only about a third of an inch in diameter and is located at the base of the brain. For me, I am the third generation of overseas Chinese in Malaysia. My grandparents came from a small village in Chaozhou Prefecture of Guangdong Province, China. We will write a custom essay sample on Reason My Grandparents Immigrate to Malaysia or any similar topic only for you Order Now They immigrated to Malaysia after World War II for several political, economic and societal reasons. In 1930ââ¬â¢s, China was in a state of disorder due to the incessant fighting between warlords. People lived in deep distress. Unfortunately, the war of resistance against Japan broke out in 1937. The Japanese Imperial Army suddenly occupied a large area of China. My grandparentsââ¬â¢ hometown was not invaded by the Japanese Army since it was only a small village. However, it faced scarcity of food. Many residents died of starvation, including my great-grandmother. My grandparents followed other villagers and fled to Fujian province. After that, they had been working in a rich family to earn a living for the following 8 years. Finally, in 1945, Japan surrendered. For U. S. A, Britain, Russia and for Japan itself, it symbolized the arrival of peace. Yet, for China, it just marked the resumption of the civil war between Nationalist Party and Chinese Communist Party. Both of the two parties wanted to control China. Nobody knew when another war would break out. The potential war would undoubtedly plunge Chinese people into misery and suffering again. Besides, people only saw a scene of devastation everywhere in China. The economic environment was worse than before. My grandparents found it harder to live in China after the war than before it. Millions of Chinese from Fujian and Guangdong province fled to South-east Asia, the so-called ââ¬Å"Nanyangâ⬠, to seek a better life. Many of them chose Malaya (the predecessor of Malaysia) to start their new life. In Malaya, the political environment was much stable then. Before the war, the peninsula was occupied by Britain. The British colonist spared no effort in maintaining the stability of Malaya as they didnââ¬â¢t want any instability to interrupt their plundering of wealth in the colony. My grandparents thought that they could get an easy life in Malaya. They would at least not be destitute and homeless there. Since 19th century, thousands of Chinese flowed to Malaya because of the opportunities for employment in the mining, plantations and businesses. The peninsula has an abundance of natural resources. British colonists were rapidly developing the tin mining industry, rubber, and palm oil farming on the land. There was a high demand of manpower in the peninsula. Consequently, British colonist had been importing a large number of Chinese laborers into Malaya. Apart from that, the success stories of Chinese businessmen like Tan Tock Seng, Tan Kah Kee and Lee Kong Chian kept inspiring my grandfather and other Chinese. Therefore, they didnââ¬â¢t mind travelling thousands of miles to Nanyang. They believed that it was a land where they could survive and become rich. According to the World Population Yearsââ¬â¢ report, there were about 1. 8 million Chinese living in Peninsular Malaya in 1947. Overseas Chinese had already formed a big community in Malaya. People who came from same the province and spoke the same dialect lived and worked together. Therefore, it was not a problem for my grandparents to adapt themselves in this new community. All these factors caused my grandparents to make this tough decision. Itââ¬â¢s really hard for them to leave their homeland and become a citizen of another country. However, they might have been killed in another war if they had stayed in China. The day-to-day struggle of survival overrode all other things such as the unwillingness to leave the place where they had grown up. They were forced to immigrate.
